What is Mold
Where does mold come from?
There are thousands of different species of mold in the world and hundreds that are more
common in the greater New England area. Mold is everywhere in nature with a job to do. That
job is to feed on and break down dead wood and leaves. Mold is a living organism that is
everywhere with microscopic spores floating around in our environment . It reproduces by releasing these microscopic spores into the air looking for a wet surface to adhere to. Mold only needs 48 hours to take root and then will continue to grow as long as these conditions exist.
Mold needs Three ingredients to take root:
1) A food source (any porous material)
2) Proper temperature (although a few species can grow in freezing temps)
3) Moisture (can be a wet surface from a flood event or just sustained high humidity)
Food Sources for Mold
Mold will grow on and consume any porous material including but not limited to: drywall, wood,
fabric on furniture, cardboard, clothing and paint.
Most common areas of mold growth are interior walls due to flooding or failed plumbing,
ceilings due to leaking roofs, basement and attic areas due to high humidity and exterior siding
due to inadequate sun exposure.
Effects of Mold
The effects of mold are Two-fold
1) YOUR HEALTH
➢ Mold spores that are elevated and air born due to infestation, are what cause harm
when they get into your respiratory system.
➢ The elderly and very young are more vulnerable to the impact of elevated mold
spores.
➢ Those with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, allergies or other respiratory
ailments are also more vulnerable to the effects of elevated mold spore activity.
➢ There are Two categories of mold species when it comes to how they effect your
health. The first is the type that effects your respiratory system and the second is
the type that effects your neurological system. The second type is more extreme in
the damage it can cause to your body as they release mycotoxins. Stachybotrys is an
example of a mold species in this category and is referred to as ‘toxic mold’ and also
‘black mold’.
2) PROPERTY DAMAGE AND DEVALUATION
Once mold takes root it will continue to grow as it slowly eats away whatever it is
growing on. The longer it is allowed to grow, the more damage it causes, making it more
costly to remediate and repair.
